Breaking News – MSNBC In The High Profile Twitter Name Market?
We recently witnessed back in Dec. 2009, when MSNBC bought the Twitter account @BreakingNews and the 1,500,000 followers that came with it, that new trends in social media acquisitions were emerging. Now today MSNBC announced they are expanding this move by acquiring the domain name BreakingNews.com; to further build out their brand.
Right now the domain name BreakingNews.com is only providing a fancy feed that pulls updates provided by the matching Twitter profile. But MSNBC admits to plans much larger than that.
Charles Tillinghast, president of the MSNBC Digital Network, said “It’s a different experience for news users, rather than any kind of diminishment for msnbc.com,” The recent acquisitions are “consistent with our strategy of creating different news experiences for different user interests,”
The domain name BreakingNews.com was held by the New York based PV Media Group and as of yesterday (Monday) was still listed as one of their own domain assets. Tillinghast declined to give up the details of how much the domain acquisition cost, but top tiered domain names and run anywhere from $20,000 – $1,000,000. Domains typically fetch what a willing buyer will pay to a willing seller and in this case my gut tells me it was well into the mid 6 figures.
Tillinghast added, “It essentially is a Twitter feed for people who don’t use Twitter,” But he also admits the strategic elements behind their motives stating that “you have to regulate how many dispatches you send out” because if they don’t, twitter followers simply won’t keep up.
