Building Blogs Advertisers Love

Many times we tend to build blogs with a “content is everything” concept in mind. I’m here to tell you, writing is not enough. Posting will not make you money. Yes, it’s an important piece to the puzzle, and should never be overlooked…because that’s the whole reason why we blog – however, just because you build it, does not mean “they will come.”

Let’s take a look at few ways to make your blog look better to potential advertisers:

# 1 – Don’t overlook the “Advertise With Us” Banner.

I wouldn’t recommend over doing it with the “we need money” slogans, but having a professional looking banner to let everyone know advertisers are welcome is critical to your success. Make sure its above the fold and is directed to an advertiser info page…preferably giving the option to download a media kit or a chance to request more information.

# 2 – First Impressions are Everything

As the saying goes, you never have a second chance to make a first impression. Besides making sure everything is in order (graphically and content wise), place affiliate banners in the slots offered to advertisers. A Best Buy or Dell ad makes you look legit and that you are open for business. Even if you only have 100 page views / week…this doesn’t mean you can’t look like you belong with the big boys.

# 3 – Stats, Stats, Stats

If you got it, flaunt it. Advertisers love nothing more than to feel like they can trust you. Show your stats on the Advertiser info page. Especially if you have something to show. Don’t just say “we are the leader” inXYZ niche. Prove it. I’ve noticed this is becoming more common – as competition increases…this will help you get an edge on others vying for the same Ad dollars.

# 4 – Stick With the Plan

Maybe Joe Biden can’t do this, but staying on message is important. Not only will it make you look like you actually have a plan, but advertisers will get a better idea of what kind of traffic they can expect if your content is consistent. A blog about notebooks will primarily have…you guess it, content concerning notebooks. But jumping around fromPC’s to iPads and historic houses will give the impression it’s a rant blog – and yes, sometimes those sites will attract advertisers…it all depends on what your goals are.

I hope these four tips will push your blog towards more success and a stronger message. Even if you are already on the top of your game (if that can even be tracked)…just make sure you take a continual look at your goals and optimize when necessary.

As always, let me know what you think. Whether you agree, or think I’ve lost it…just shoot me a line, and there’s a guy name Joel who would love to discuss your thoughts and ideas.
