Facebook.com Gets Bold With New Social Tools

It should be no surprise to anyone following Internet marketing that Facebook wants to be the premier link between users and publishers. Heck, anyone with a Facebook account knows this.

Well, they just took another step towards achieving this goal.

The Palo Alto, CA company just released a set of tools which will attempt to bring the Facebook experience to the entire web. Sounds like a challenge right? If anyone could do it, I would bet on this company.

Essentially, they are creating a plugin which will result in every web page capable of being converted into a Facebook page. Web publishers can insert a simple line of code into their posts / entries allowing the user to “Like” information. Should they choose this, the page will be placed in the relevant section on their profile.

Of course every new tool has to have a cool name: meet the Oprah Graph

Here are some details you might be interested for all you social media Zealots:

*    The plugins are part of a new project to to make every website connected with its network.

*    This announcement was made by CEO Mark Zuckerberg and lead engineer Brett Taylor at Facebook’s developer conference.

*    Facebook plans on releasing the new features on Wednesday morning, and Zuckerberg estimates over 1 billion Like Buttons will be served in 24 hours. He also went on to refer to the       new project as “the most transformative thing we’ve ever done for the web.” Like re-defining the way human’s communicate with each other wasn’t enough.

In my opinion, if Facebook can pull this off, which they have the perfect platform to do so, we not only will be able to communicate with each other…it will open up a whole new level of accountability to the web.

Recently, there was movement to add a “Dislike” button to Facebook status updates. I’m sure this is still being promoted, however, the higher ups are not keen on giving users the option to denigrate information…vs. allowing solely positive responses. Now, blogs which offer the Like button will seem more authoritative compared to their counterparts who don’t.

Kind of like a badge or right of passage.

On another note, I think this is one step closer towards converting Facebook accounts as a Universal login for websites. Google is already doing something similar with Google Accounts and offering all of their products under one umbrella…and The Daily Show allows users to login with their FB credentials.

So, who’s going to dominate? Google, Facebook…as of a few years ago, some thought it was Google. Search is still important, but wouldn’t life be better if information came looking for me?

Well, Facebook intends on making this happen.

Sounds like it will be fun to watch. Stay tuned.

Will Facebook be able to add in a Search option to counter Google? If all the information is shared on their network…why not search straight from your profile?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
