Facebook.com Named in 20% of Divorce’s

My grandfather told me a story about the day TV started to “air” on the military base where he was serving. In the story he describes how during the summer time of the 1950′s, family’s would collectively be in the streets engaging in activities like grilling, riding bicycles, visiting with each other etc. He paints a picture where the community was engaged with one another on a very personal level. Then it all stopped.

The night TV first aired on the military base . . . he said it was as if force invaded the streets and kidnapped all the children and parents alike.

He remembered as he walked outside and didn’t see a soul in sight. . . . he described the eeriness of it all.

If we realize it or not, the internet and social networking is still very new. This virtual wild-wild west is uncovering new social trending in the same way that television did in the 1950′s.

Today I learned that facebook was named in 20% of divorces filed in the United States.

Facebook you ask?

It’s not really Facebook, it’s stupid people doing stupid things on Facebook. After all social networking sites are just the doorway for wives to re-connect with past lovers and for husbands to flirt with something “strange”.

divorce

The data was provided by the online research group Divorce-Online which is ran by Mark Keenan. He searched the keyword “Facebook” out of 5,000 total divorces and found 989 occurrences.

I think as the internet evolves you will see many more social trending like the above particularly of a negative connotation.

My opinion? The internet is great, my life revolves around the internet. However, I am the first to admit that the internet holds powers we are just now starting to un-cover and we are fools if we don’t recognize that we are in the infancy of the discovery.
