Freelancing In A Bad Economy

I am moving right now, cleaning out my office etc . . . and I just ran across an article from the Wall Street Journal that I had saved from May 9th, 2009.

The original title to the article was “Negotiating The Freelance Economy” and I thought I would write a quick re-cap of the great information that I found from reading about Rebecca Haden.

rebecca-hadenApparently Rebecca Haden lost her job around spring of 2008 where she managed a small store. Due to the poor economic times the store was forced to close.

Now you ask . . . ? Well she’s making more money online than she previously did with her employment as a small store manager.

How did she do it?

Pretty simple actually . . . She started “freelancing”. While I personally enjoy PPC / SEO / Affiliate marketing, I am constantly pondering the success of others who make a full time income online outside of my own particular areas of interest. The most amazing part is that they succeed using some really simple tactics.

Now Rebecca runs her own SEO and Copywriting service website www.RebeccaHaden.com where she enjoys a steady stream of clients who use her services.

Freelancing is expected to grow!

The article also notes that through Jan – Mar (2009) employers listed around 75,000 freelance jobs on Elance.com and 43,000 jobs on Odesk.com . . . I personally use both of these services to hire various positions with in my own money making efforts.

This growth is largely due to major companies looking to save money and an increase in “Entrepreneurial” activity as individuals look to supplement their income.

Action

What skills do you have that can potentially thrust you into a full time income online? Can you do SEO, PPC, or Article Writing? Perhaps you lack a particular skill set, then consider taking a class at your local community college or start reading online until you are blue in the face.

If you are struggling to make money online spend some time doing some self assessment and ask yourself 2 things . . . 1 – What would you enjoy doing . . . 2 – What can you do . . . . Then get up and get to work!

You can make a full time income from freelancing; Rebecca Haden has proven it all over again.
