The Bing Outage – 30 Minutes Of Free Promotion

I first read about the Bing outage on Techcrunch as I was perusing my daily geek news sources.

I was amazed that there was so “many” commenter’s from people who seemed to actually care.

At first they gave an “update #1″ where they showed the page was down 100%.

Then we got an “update #2″ showing the error page that Bing.com had.

So forever being curious about what really drives the internet, I had the thought of “How many people actually care” ? This lead me to a thought that I am sure some of you have also reached.

I learned pretty fast that Bing.com has a market cap of only 8%.

Now this was interesting, because I instantly came back to the fact that the mega Bing + Yahoo deal was just finalized pending approval by the US government.

So pending this deal, they are already plotting and devising the demise of Google. . . . so what does all this have to do with each other?

Picture it like this, when Bing went down (out of 100) there was 92 of us using Google, Ask, Aol, etc. and none of us really cared.

There were however 8 people (all who still use IE) and happen o have Bing set as their default web browser who were forced to type a URL into their browsers. My gut tells me only 4 of those 8 knew how to do it.

I digressed . . .

Where does Bing + Yahoo want to be in the coming years? What will they be able to achieve?

Think about this . . . have you ever heard of the saying “There is no such thing as bad publicity!” ?

Let me tell you what was really happening.

Bing + Yahoo knows they have their work cut out for them. During a 30 minute outage where only 8 out of 100 people suffered any discomfort Bing was able to do what start ups (yes I consider it a start up) all over the world dream of.

Bing got us bloggers to blog them, they got covered by the Washington post, Techcrunch, and every other major news agency . . . .

Sounds pretty smart if you ask me!

Still my prediction is that by 2011 Bing + Yahoo will represent no more than 30% of the search engine marketing cap, while Google will settle in around 60% and everyone else will scrape up the remaining 10%.
