The main reason I am not going to follow Ashton Kutcher!

You might have heard that Ashton Kutcher passed 1 million followers on Twitter.

Oddly enough, when the news broke of this amazing accomplishment, the Ashton Kutcher Twitter following clan instantly exploded to 1.5 million followers.

So naturally I wanted to see what the hubbub was about so I started to do some digging to find out why do people follow Ashton?

When I first went to Ashton Kutcher’s profile I notice there are 1.5 million followers and he is following a little over 170 people. This didn’t set well with me. . . . so I stopped caring why people follow Ashton and realized there is a lot of people who got some sort of twisted satisfaction of being a part of something “great”?

Now I admit, I am pretty new to Twitter and I already get those “spam” followers. Typically I won’t follow these people because I don’t see the point and I go 1 step further, I block them from following me. With that said, I don’t think Ashton is using a robot to add Twitter followers so this lets me know he doesn’t subscribe to the “Follow Me and I will Follow You!” ideology.

I am going to go with a 50% rule. This is to say that 50% of Twitter is real and 50% is spam. With that said, my goal is to stay above a 50% “Following to Follower” ratio.

This got me to thinking . . . how are the people that I admire in the IM industry fairing? I choose a few and people for which I have general respect and what they have accomplished online . . . and pit them against Ashton Kutcher. After all, I am in the process of revamping my whole life and trying hard to establish myself in the IM / Wordpress industry, so it would do me well to consider such things.

Below is a graph of my findings of the following to follower’s ratio:

Twitter’er
Following Followers Ratio
Ashton
170 1500000 0.011%
Show Money 6569 29039 22.621%
Zac Johnson 511 2363 21.625%
John Chow 25624 27816 92.120%
Brad Callen 5454 9877 55.219%
NickyCakes 145 1172 12.372%
SEO Joe 23811 23057 103.270%

FTW – John Chow,

he has done an amazing job of using Twitter to integrate into his blog and expand his business. It’s his blog and profile that I have decided to use as the model for what I am planning.

Close 2nd – SEO Joe (you only got 2nd becuae you can’t hvae a ratio over 100% (its my own rule, but still props to you and what you have accomplished!)

Everyone else (Jeremy, Zac, Brad, & Nicky) . . . . I still admire all of you guys a great deal and genuenlly appreciate your contributions to the IM community, but try to work on following more people.

Thanks Ashton, but I won’t be following you any time soon! . . . and I don’t really admire anything about you either. (I know, like you care – bla bla bla).

Thanks John Chow, you helped me more than you know . . .

Keep it real!

I really like John Chow myself too. He is a very nice person. He actually replies to my posts on Twitter one or 2 times actually.

I follow some celebrities on Twitter. Most of them do not follow their followers. But an exception to the rule:

    Rick Sanchez (ricksanchezcnn on Twitter)
