Wordpress Wins Coveted CMS Award

wordpress_icon_1If you were to ask any blogger about what content management platform they would recommend, at least 90% would say Word Press. Not every blogger uses Word Press, but across the forums and bogs about blogging, most up and coming bloggers are encouraged to use this software.

With this said, the public perception of Word Press has taken a dramatic shift. Since it’s creation in 2003 as a blog software, it is now widely used by over 200 million sites as a content management system (CMS).

If you’re new to blogging, or to the internet in general, Word Press, is an open source (meaning the code can be edited by others), blog and website publishing software, which is known to be user friendly, providing simple template and widget install.

But beyond blogging and mere public perception, Word Press was just awarded as the Overall Best Open Source CMS of 2009. The award received over 12,000 nominations with 23,000 votes cast. To be honest with you, this really wasn’t that surprising. In fact, I think receiving an award for best Open Source CMS is slightly understating the power of Word Press. Top tier sites like TechCrunch, The New York Times, the British Prime Minister..as well as many Top 100 Technorati Sites.

Even though Word Press just won this coveted award, over the likes of Movable Type, Blogger and Typepad, their popularity has been increasing for a while now. If you look at the following Google Trends chart, it’s clear which platform has been rising steadily the past few years.

Blue being Word Press of course.

As seen by the above results, I don’t see their growth slowing down. As I mentioned before, Word Press has grown beyond blogging. Magazines, social networks, new start up sites, sports news, scrap booking sites, church websites..you name it, are now being hosted by Word Press. Including your very own Meta Fever! That right there should be good enough for you.

Again, look at the increasing trend since 2006 for sites being published by Word Press.

If you’re thinking about starting a site, including all of the reasons mentioned above, I would highly recommend using this platform. In fact you don’t even have to install it yourself. For example, if you host your site with GoDaddy, with one click you can have the latest version installed on your site. Don’t worry about memorizing the Joomla Bible (trust me, I tried this once), or trying to learn Drupal. However, I think you should educate yourself on other CMS’…just stick with Word Press for now.

Let me know how it works out for you.
